Monti e valli

Lake Maggiore is set in a circle of mountains, with a variety of landscape which has few rivals in the world. Within a radius of 50 km the green hills near the lake give way to peaks and glaciers at altitudes above 4,000 metres. Rising above its neighbouring peaks is the Massif of Monte Rosa, at 4,633 metres the second highest mountain in the Alps.

A short drive from Villa Aurora is one of the entrances to the Val Grande National Park, the largest wilderness area in the Alps. In a setting of unspoiled natural beauty, the park offers a variety of treks (from one to several days).

Winter sports dominate the mountain areas when the snow arrives. The Lake Maggiore area possesses a wealth of ski resorts - Macugnaga, San Domenico, Domobianca, Val Formazza, Alpe Devero – Valle Vigezzo - to tempt fans of Alpine and Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering, snowboarding and snowshoeing. Until the late spring, national Nordic ski teams from all over the world train at Riale in the upper Formazza valley. And for skiing with a spectacular view of the lake, don’t miss an excursion to the top of the Mottarone mountain above Stresa (cable car service from Stresa).
E per una sciata con vista lago, imperdibile una salita sulla cima del Mottarone (funivia in servizio da Stresa).
